What is CO2 Extraction?

When it comes to cannabis, there are many methods of concentrating raw plant material into a usable extract or oil. At Carbon Cannabis, we set out to achieve a high potency craft product, using the cleanest method possible, and for us that means using APEKS CO2 extraction technology.

Ethanol vs. CO2

Ethanol, another word for alcohol, and a relatively harsh solvent, is one of the most widely used because of its ability to extract large volumes of material at once (typically 10x the amount we get with CO2,) making it the most productive method of extraction. Ethanol has been utilized in cannabis extracts longer than we can accurately trace. There is indication of Ethanol suspended tinctures dating back to the early to mid 1900’s. This can likely be attributed to its use in early medicine.

History of CO2 Extraction

CO2 extraction is relatively new technology; first developed in Germany around 1945 for industrial purposes. After war related industrial uses dried up, this technology was repurposed for extracting hops and other botanical concentrates including cannabis. This provides us with a unique advantage to fine tune and be highly selective toward our target. That means, when we are extracting cannabis, its gentle nature gives us the ability to not only preserve natural terpenes, flavonoids, cannabinoids and other beneficial plant compounds but to be efficient in doing so.

Why CO2 is Our Extract of Choice

While CO2 extraction is not the most cost effective, it is the highest quality, cleanest solution, which is how Carbon Cannabis became the trusted supplier of the pure, potent CBD products you enjoy today!
